How to complete credit counseling after bankruptcy

Now that you have decided to file for bankruptcy in New Jersey, there are certain requirements that must be met before you can receive a discharge. One of these requirements is credit counseling. This may sound complicated, but, fortunately, the procss can be made easy with help from a bankruptcy law firm.

Credit counseling is in two parts. The first part must be completed prior to filing for bankruptcy. The credit counseling course informs potential debtors about all of the debt relief options from which an individual can choose. The certificate received after completing the course is filed with the court.

The second part -- the financial counseling course -- is to be completed before the bankruptcy discharge is issued. In this course, bankruptcy filers identify their financial pitfalls and are offered advice on how to avoid them in the future. Upon completing this course, the filer will also receive a certificate that is to be filed with the court.

Several options for taking these courses are available here in New Jersey. There are many organizations that offer these services. They can also be done from the comfort of your home either by phone or online. The courses do not take very long and could provide helpful information on how to stay out of debt and how to create a budget in order to meet your financial goals.

More information regarding credit counseling and its completion can be found on our credit counseling page. Debtors seeking bankruptcy need not be apprehensive about all of the requirements of filing for bankruptcy. Seeking the advice and assistance of an attorney can help make the process less intimidating.
